Improve Ship Propeller Efficiency via Optimum Design of Propeller Boss Cap Fins

This paper aims to cost-effectively improve the energy efficiency of large vessels in shipping by optimum design propeller boss cap fins (PBCFs). First, a model modern four-blade Ro-Ro ship, with no fin its original design, is experimentally and numerically investigated. The computational fluid dynamics (CFD) reproduced all experiments very well. Then, CFD used conduct comprehensive PBCFs for down-scaled propeller. Besides commonly rectangular PBCFs, nine airfoils are investigated, due their favorable lift-to-drag ratio great potential being effective PBCFs. best performing profile, among 10 shapes, chosen as PBCF further optimization. Finally, propeller/rudder system achieved. It was found yield remarkable gains under both off-design operation conditions, mainly suppressed hub vortex partly extra thrust. strength analysis confirmed that feasible practice can be industrial vessels. generalized criteria also benefit other systems cost-effective saving.
